Soon To Pass

I've had my laptop for nearly 3 years now. I think it's about to die. It was top of the range when I got it (It cost me nearly £1000, and seeing as I was only 16 and unemployed at the time, that was a lot of money to spend on a laptop).

However, over the last few months the battery life has been getting worse. Currently, if I were to unplug it right now I would have just under 7 minutes to finish writing this post and to publish it before it died. And if I turn off WIFI until I'm ready to post? 9 minutes.

The weird thing is that when I bought the laptop, I paid a little more to get a 9 Cell Battery instead of a 6 Cell one. I wonder what the battery life would be like now if I hadn't.

So, I think when I get some monies, I will buy myself a new laptop. The question is, PC or MAC?

  2. PC if you want to be as smart as possible.
Mac is not bad but it's overrated. I have no idea how people still buy Macbooks or a Mac, I see PC as a cheaper and better alternative. might consider buying a PC if you want your computer to last. But if you're still on buying a new laptop might I suggest when you're at home that you remove the battery while it's full charge and use the plug as a power source instead and use the battery if you're out of the house.

  3. It depends what you want it for. I'm sticking with Windows for the most part because I'm gaming a lot on mine, if you want it for workish things and such, then do a mac, macs are cool. I recommend considering just buying a new battery though, it might work. Or a new battery charger.

  4. PC. macs are overpriced sh*t. I've been thinking I need to get a new pc, I haven't claimed anything on my insurance for a while and I've got $1000 portable electronics cover. I won't say no to a free $1000 laptop ;)

  5. You can get some awesome laptops at competitive prices atm, I think Macs are still on the expensive side and a laptop allows a lot more gaming and customisation options, what with custom OS's and everything

  7. Honestly it's not your laptop. This happens with nearly ALL laptops unfortunately, to the point where it needs to be plugged in or it will shut off. Try getting a new battery first and see where that goes. If you're dead set on getting a new computer, please don't get a Mac. You're better off buying an old laptop and putting Linux on it (older laptop would be about the equivalent as today's Macbooks). I know it seems biased, but if you know anything about computers, you'll know that they are inferior.

  9. I'm in the exact same boat, I bought a g72 from Asus about 3 years ago, and my harddrive is starting to whine. I payed 1,200 for that thing. Haha

  10. The trouble is people don't know how to care for Lithium Ion batteries, your battery is what is toast not the laptop. If you leave it plugged in all the time the cells are constantly being topped up, this wears them out faster than large charge and drain cycles. When you get a new battery or laptop if you always leave it plugged in you will get the same outcome. Learn to use the tool you buy, like a car knowing how to use it will yield more years of service.

  11. Have you tried just getting a new battery? This is a fairly common problem.

  12. Never buy Apple stuff. They work as good as PCs, but the nice look make then have higher prices.

  13. PC! I just got mine and it does everything I need it to, second-hand for £150 (around $280 I think)!

  14. I'd say PC, but then again I've been biased for years. Good luck on finding a good one that gives you more life than your current one did.

  16. Seriously dude. Batteries get bad really really fast. If you don't want to go out and buy a new computer for £1000, just buy a new battery for £70. Problem solved.

  17. Once I read about a hack to give a longer life to Li-ion batteries, "Put them in a sealed bag and leve them in the freezer for a couple of days". I haven't had the chance to test it but i'll have it in consideration. Nice blog, following!

  18. Mac, if you have the money. Ubuntu based PC if not. Avoid windows at all costs haha. I grew up on Mac and Linux with a strong dislike of Windows.
